Canadian insurance cooperative The Co-operators has announced on Friday that president and CEO Kathy Bardswick will be retiring by the end of 2016. She has held the position for 14 years.

During Bardswick’s tenure, The Co-operators grew organically and via acquisitions, reaching over C$40bn in assets under administration. In 2013, the company was awarded the top rank on Corporate Knights' list of Most Sustainable Cooperatives in the World. Bardswick was also named one of 2014’s Top 25 Women of Influence by Women of Influence Inc.

"Her fundamental belief that the world needs organizations that follow ethical business practices, and incorporate sustainable, responsible decision-making, has had a significant impact on our organization and the communities in which we serve” said John Harvie, Chairperson, Board of Directors.

The Co-operators’ board will be starting the process to select Bardswick’s successor after the annual general meeting in April.
