A couple whose late night tryst in their insurance office has sent the social media world into overdrive - but their bosses aren’t smiling.

The two employees of Marsh New Zealand in Christchurch enjoyed a romantic tryst in the office during a weekend inadvertently entertained patrons of the Carlton Bar and Eatery across the road, who filmed and photographed the whole encounter before uploading the footage to various social media sites, Fairfax Media reported.

The photos have attracted thousands of likes and hundreds of shares on Facebook and Twitter.

“The whole pub knew about it and was watching, while they were totally oblivious to it. And afterwards celebrating with wine,” posted one man online.

“They should have turned the lights out,” said another.

Ex-fiiance defends her
The woman at the centre of the scandal is a "lovely" woman who made a mistake, her ex-fiance says.

The man, who was unnamed, spoke to The Edge radio station in New Zealand this week saying the woman had not cheated on him because they had ended their relationship about six months ago.

The woman's former fiance spoke out because people had sent him messages of sympathy after the romp went public, believing they were still together.

He wanted "to clear up the speculation" and "bring closure."

He said the woman's encounter with a company manager on Friday night was out of character.

"She's not that sort of person. It was her first mistake," he said. "She is a really nice person... she's lovely. We had a really amazing relationship."

Investigation underway
Marsh CEO Grant Milne said the company was taking the matter very seriously and an employment investigation was underway.

“It’s not the type of behaviour we condone. It’s very disappointing,” he said in the report.

Executives from the Auckland head office had flown down the following morning to help deal with the incident.
