The switch to Standard Time had the usual uptick in car, cyclist and pedestrian accidents in the days following Saturday night, when the clocks were moved back one hour.

The City of Toronto has released data on collisions from 2009 to 2013, identifying the intersections with the highest rates of collisions for cyclists and drivers.

According to the Toronto Star, the collision rates take into account the total volume of vehicles using the intersection.

Drivers were most likely to crash at the following intersections:
•    Lake Shore Boulevard at Lower Jarvis Street
•    Lake Shore Boulevard at Don Roadway
•    Ellesmere Road at Bellamy Road
•    Lawrence Avenue East at Midland Avenue
•    St. Clair Avenue at Old Weston Road

Cyclists were most likely to be involved in collisions at these intersections:
•    Queen Street West at Claremont Street
•    Grace Street at College Street
•    Shaw Street at College Street
•    Queen Street West at Dufferin Street
•    Spadina Avenue at College Street

Although the extra hour of sleep from last weekend does throw people off, the loss of an hour of sleep in the spring wreaks greater havoc, when the majority of Canadians switch to Daylight Saving Time.

According to data examined by Stanley Coren, a professor at the University of British Columbia collected by Transport Canada, “we found a bump of 7 per cent in terms of traffic accidents. That is huge,” says Coren. “The death rate in the three days following the switch to DST (from accidents as well as heart attacks) went up 6 per cent.”
