The Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) has issued a couple of notices, warning consumers in the area to avoid all business with two unlicensed insurance “professionals.”

The commission has put out a warning against Andrew Burrows-Trotman and Owais Shaikh – also known as Salman Khan. According to the FSCO, both have appeared to be soliciting auto insurance through the Desjardins Insurance group of companies. However, neither are licensed with FSCO, nor are they affiliated or with Desjardins Insurance.

FSCO has recommended that any consumer contacted by either Burrows-Trotman or Shaikh should exercise caution. Consumers are also warned not to obtain insurance products arranged by the two.

The two notices come after the FSCO issued a similar warning a week ago about another unlicensed agent.

Consumers who buy insurance from unlicensed individuals are not protected under the Insurance Act, as well as the regulations that govern Ontario’s licensed companies and agents. The FSCO also encouraged consumers to refer to the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO)’ s website for a list of licensed brokers in Ontario.
