Benefits carrier Green Shield Canada (GSC) is donating $250,000 to the University of Toronto’s new Discovery Pharmacy program.

The Discovery Pharmacy, which is based out of the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, was established to serve as a “digital innovation and research hub” for the pharmacy profession, a release said. The program will also provide students with hands-on experience as professional pharmacists.

According to GSC, the program’s alignment with the company’s pharmacy background was a key factor in the donation.

“Founded by pharmacists over 60 years ago, GSC has a long history rooted in pharmacy and providing affordable access to medications,” said GSC EVP of pharmacy innovation and patient experience Mark Rolnick. “We continue to advocate for the important role that pharmacists play within our health care system, and this will become even more important in an increasingly digital health-oriented environment.”

“We are so pleased to have GSC give their initial support to the Discovery Pharmacy as a Founding Donor,” commented Lisa Dolovich, dean of the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. “This early support is crucial to helping us move forward as Discovery Pharmacy grows in scope and impact.”

Dolovich also stressed that the university has recognized the important role pharmacists play in the delivery of front-line health care and that the University of Toronto will continue to lead in the development of the area.
