Meet the ‘Motorsexual Man’

Wacky Weekend: He may just be the best-looking menace on the road. Just hope he isn’t driving behind you. Plus, “special” insurance rates and the cost of eating glass…

Meet the new ‘Motorsexual Man.’

He’s sexy hot, he looks confident, he smells great – and he crashes his car while he grooms and drives.

More Th>n Insurance is warning about “those appearance-based gents that constantly fawn over their reflection and groom themselves while driving.”

Research of 3,000 male motorists in the United Kingdom revealed that this chic man behind the wheel has been at fault for 2.2 million fender-benders on Britain’s roads over the past 12 months.

That great hair and “dangerous” look is costing U.K. insurers approximately Cdn$1,003 per crash.

What are these metrosexual men doing behind the wheel?

They are styling their hair (of course!), inspecting their complexion, pouting and posing in their rear view mirrors, applying fake tans, hair gel, foundation and moisturizers – all while supposedly in control of their cars. One admits to taking a picture of himself on his mobile while driving just to ceck himself out.

“I’ve always got a pot of clay in the car to make sure my hair is as good as it can be,” according to ‘Sam,’ who shares his beauty secrets on a video warning about the dangers of primping while driving. “Especially when I have been at the gym, I always keep my aftershave nearby in case I have to nip out by a shop. When I’m in the car, I want to make sure I’m looking good and I’m smelling good, too.”

Would you eat glass to make a fraudulent insurance claim on a restaurant?

Ronald and Mary Evanos did.

And they duped more than just restaurants. They scammed grocers, bars and hotels out of insurance money too. The businesses always paid up.

All told, the glass-eating couple collected almost US$200,000 in bogus claims, according to PR Newswire.

They were eventually caught. Ronald was thrown in jail in 2006 and Mary’s bad deeds finally caught up with her in 2010 when she was charged with insurance fraud.

Here's a way to get a "special" lower insurance premium that we wouldn't recommend.

Some Canadian car owners wanting a cheap insurance rate once got a sweetheart deal from salespeople at a few car dealerships and other businesses.

These business operations were offering an insurance special. There were charging $500 in finder’s fees and consulting fees to arrange insurance with a broker that they claimed would save the car owners lots of money on premiums.

The scam artists then put false information on the insurance application forms so that customers would be put into a cheaper rate group.

Alas, since the policies were purchased under false pretenses, they were invalid.

Hundreds of policies later, the scammers’ fees amounted to about $1 million.

The insurance company has since offered new policies, based on the correct information, to the duped customers.
