A recent survey by RBC Insurance found that more than half of Canadians going on vacations this summer lack travel insurance.

Only 40% of those surveyed answered that they have travel insurance in place for their trips.

The same survey also revealed that while 79% of Canadians said that they were planning to travel this year, 53% of those respondents traveling within Canada (but outside of their home province) were not likely to purchase travel insurance for their trip.

Almost half – 46% – of those who answered that they do not need travel insurance reasoned that they are already covered by their provincial healthcare plan. Another 39% said they already have travel insurance through their credit card or group benefits plan.

On the other hand, 75% of the survey’s respondents who are vacationing outside Canada said that they would purchase travel insurance for their trips. Sixty-one per cent (61%) of those not likely to purchase travel insurance for international trips said that they are already covered through their credit card or group benefits plan. About 15% of international vacationers said that they would take their chances and go on a trip without insurance.

“Whether you’re planning a staycation or traveling internationally, travel insurance is something you should pack. It brings peace of mind to know that if you experience a health issue or your trip is interrupted, you will be taken care of,” commented RBC Insurance head of travel Stacey Hughes-Brooks.

“Most travellers are aware of the need for insurance while out of country but there’s a misconception that you don’t need it while traveling domestically. Canadians need to be aware that government health plans may not cover all medical expenses outside of their home province. Items like air ambulances, X-rays, prescription drugs or emergency dental work are often not included.”
