Saluting Canada’s Sochi Olympic athletes is just the latest part of the ongoing efforts to maintaining an online presence for this brokerage.

“Canada fans in the stands, if you're with us: Clap Your Hands!” say the employees at HJM Insurance & Financial Services in Milton, Ont., who have decorated their office in a sea of red and white in support of Canadian athletes competing at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

“We have decorated the office for the Olympics,” says Cindy Colby, a broker and branch manager in Milton, Ont. “And we have a social media person in our Guelph office who helps us out posting photos online. We’ve found that helps us out a lot.”

Those pictured in the Milton office saluting Canada's Olympic effort are (from left to right) Gary, Brenda, Valerie, Patti, Sue, Mary, Cindy, Debbie and Erik.

Cam Guthrie, who heads up customer relations and online marketing through the Guelph head office, is responsible for posting HJM’s along with the online arm of their business BetterInsurance.ca through social media.

“Our online presence is continually evolving,” Guthrie told Insurance Business. “What we have found is that by using social media, such as Google+, the Google organic search seems to find us while linking people looking for insurance in the nine cities that we are serving in across Ontario – that is where a large majority of the traffic comes from. Google allows us to put our information on there for this magic price called: F R double E.”

Some of the photos posted include the Holiday Food Drive Challenge on December 14, of which HJM Milton lead all other nine branches with 840 items collected; the Wiarton Willie Weekend pre-festivities kick off in January, in which the Wiarton office sponsored a Wake Up Willie Dinner & Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre; and the adoption of Pigs of Hope for the Canadian Cancer Society Transportation Program, which featured the Meaford and Owen Sound offices back in October.

“The world has changed – you don’t see much of the printed yellow pages anymore,” says Guthrie.
