Telematics is proving a hit for one Quebec insurer, as its Mobiliz program has placed it among the finalists for the province’s 2014 Fidéides Award.

Organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Quebec, Industrial Alliance is in the ‘business and social commitment’ category along with two other companies.

“We are very happy that the impact of Mobiliz is recognized in our own community, given that this innovative concept was created in Quebec area,” says Jean Lapointe vice-president for Mobiliz. “We always like to remind people that Industrial Alliance was the first insurer to use telematics technology in Canada to create Mobiliz program.”

The award ceremony is set for March 13 at the Gala entrepreneurs in the Quebec Congress Center.

Mobiliz is a telematics program that aims to solve the problem of speeding among young drivers by rewarding responsible driving behaviour. The premium for those insured by Mobiliz is based on driving behaviour, rather than on an age group or previous claims.

In Quebec, drivers between the ages of 16 to 24 represent 10 per cent of all licensed drivers, but make up 25 per cent of all accidents involving bodily injury.

Mobiliz was introduced in 2012 to Quebec drivers to resounding success, Industrial Alliance president and COO Michel Laurin told Insurance Business, predicting telematics will be the hot technology for this year.

“Telematics will be spreading out in Canada at a fast pace,” says Laurin. “Even the broker associations have inked some deals with telematics providers. It’s coming; 2014 will be the year of Telematics in Canada.”
