Feline and canine medical insurance provider Trupanion announced Monday that it has formed a partnership with Asista Foundation to provide the non-profit’s certified service dogs with lifelong pet medical insurance coverage.

Under the policy, service dogs will be covered for health care costs such as diagnostic tests, surgeries, medications, and for other things that could impact their health such as congenital and hereditary conditions.

The Asista Foundation, based in Quebec, offers service dogs to those with autism, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and/or psychological needs. Currently, the non-profit is launching a program in collaboration with Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) to provide veterans with service dogs at no cost; Trupanion’s insurance policy will also cover these dogs.

The non-profit underscored that giving their clients peace of mind is a top priority; a no-obligation Trupanion policy will help veterans who might struggle with paying for the medical costs of their service dogs. At the same time, the policy will ensure that the hard-working service dogs receive the best health care available.

“Our veterans give so much for our freedom and it’s an honour to be able to give back by helping them through their journey towards mental freedom,” Asista founder and director of public affairs John Agionicolaitis said in a statement.

On top of the health coverage, the Trupanion-Asista partnership will include a dedicated contact center team to assist those involved in the program. The same team will also hold training sessions for Asista, helping the non-profit learn more about pet health insurance so that it could educate its client about the new benefit.

Trupanion will also help track enrollments, claims data, and conditions covered, allowing the insurer to provide Asista with a detailed report on how the program is providing value to the non-profit’s clients.

“Service dogs make a life-changing impact on veterans who are in need of them, and our teams across the business are excited and ready to support them through our medical insurance program,” remarked Trupanion CEO Darryl Rawlings.
