An Insurance Business article on the heels of a snow storm is drawing the attention of brokers – suggesting use of social media is the new and more effective way to keep clients “in the loop.”

The winter storm, which left more than 17,000 Nova Scotia Power customers in the dark on Wednesday and left parts of the province buried under 50 to 60 centimetres of snow, had insurers reaching out to clients to advise them on how to prepare for the expected damage.

One IB subscriber applauded Wilson Insurance for its approach to share updates through social media.

“It was great to see Wilson Insurance share some info through their social media channels,” wrote Kat Macaulay, of Rogers Insurance. “That's much more effective and efficient than mass emails!”

At the height of the storm, peak gusts rocked parts of Cape Breton with gusts of 161 km/h.

The last big storm to hit the east coast was the ice storm that left southern Ontario and the Atlantic region without power for days, and in some cases, weeks (see ‘Record $3.2 billion paid out during 2013’).
