The company has brought in Urs Uhlmann to serve as the CEO, country manager, for the region. As leader of Canadian operations, Uhlmann will head-up the company’s regional business strategy and overall insurance operations, a release said.

He will be based in XL Catlin’s Toronto office and will oversee operations in Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver.

Uhlmann was recently the CEO of global corporate at Zurich Canada – a role he held for five years. Previously, he was senior vice-president of global corporate, also at Zurich.

“Urs brings extensive knowledge of commercial P&C insurance and broad international experience that will support our growth objectives in Canada,” commented XL Catlin chief executive of client and country management Kelly Lyles.

“We are excited to have Urs join our team of country leaders who oversee our growing portfolio of global lines which include aerospace, energy and fine art and specie insurance,” said chief executive of global lines Doug Howat.

Howat added that he is confident Uhlmann’s “strategic and critical thinking skills and proven track record for growing commercial insurance businesses” will raise XL Catlin’s insurance presence in Canada.

“Given XL Catlin’s extensive industry and underwriting expertise to address complex risks across industries such as construction and technology, we’re pleased to have Urs join the North America insurance team to lead our growth efforts in Canada,” remarked North America chief executive Joe Tocco.
