A "super" El Niño is developing in the Pacific, with forecasters now projecting sea surface temperature anomalies that could exceed anything recorded in the past century. Environment Canada meteorologist Bill Merryfield told CBC's Daybreak North that current models point toward a peak surge past 3 degrees Celsius above average - well beyond the 2-degree threshold that defines a super El Niño event.

The pattern will not materially affect this year's already-severe BC wildfire season. El Niño's effects on BC do not typically set in until the event peaks later in the year. What it signals instead is an elevated probability of a milder, drier winter stretching into spring, with below-normal precipitation raising the odds of unusually low snowpack - particularly along the coast, where the difference between rain and snow often comes down to which side of the freezing line a storm falls on.

Why an early snowmelt matters more to insurers than a mild winter does

A lower snowpack combined with a milder spring creates the conditions for an earlier-than-normal snowmelt. Merryfield said that can dry out land surfaces and vegetation heading into summer, raising drought and wildfire risk for 2027 if spring and early summer rainfall does not make up the shortfall.

For property and catastrophe underwriters, that is a materially different signal than "a mild winter is coming." It is an early, probabilistic indicator that 2027's BC wildfire season could start from a drier baseline than this year's already-active one did - and this year's season has already driven evacuations of over 20,000 people around Penticton alone.

This is not an isolated Canadian forecasting exercise. As Insurance Business has previously reported, reinsurers and catastrophe risk analysts are already treating this super El Niño as a global redistribution of catastrophe risk rather than a simple reduction in overall exposure, with reduced Atlantic hurricane activity likely offset by elevated wildfire, drought, flood or severe convective storm risk elsewhere. Swiss Re and other major reinsurers have specifically flagged the American West as a region where fire risk could intensify under these conditions - a pattern that plausibly extends to BC's interior and coastal regions given Merryfield's BC-specific forecast.

ILS specialists are already treating this El Niño event as a driver of repricing across reinsurance and catastrophe bond markets heading into 2027. Catastrophe modellers have acknowledged that historical wildfire models have tended to underestimate risk in a warming climate, and a below-normal BC snowpack forecast - while not a certainty - is precisely the kind of seasonal signal that property-level exposure estimates are increasingly incorporating well ahead of the season it actually affects.

What renewal planning looks like given this signal

For brokers and underwriters preparing for January reinsurance renewals, the practical implication runs in two directions. For underwriters writing BC property and wildfire-exposed commercial accounts, a higher-probability-of-active-2027-season signal warrants reviewing attachment points and wildfire-exposed portfolio concentrations now rather than after the spring snowpack is confirmed. Waiting for March snowpack data to validate the El Niño forecast compresses the time available to adjust treaty structures or individual account underwriting before renewals close.

For brokers advising commercial clients in BC's wildfire-exposed interior - including forestry operations, rural hospitality, agricultural businesses, and residential developments at the wildland-urban interface - the El Niño signal is a prompt to review whether current sum insured levels and business interruption indemnity periods reflect the risk of an active season starting earlier than usual.

The uncertainty worth keeping in view

Merryfield was careful to note that El Niño's relationship to a warming planet cuts both ways scientifically. Climate change affects the baseline temperatures used to measure whether an El Niño is occurring at all - meaning part of this event's projected record strength reflects the planet's general warming trend rather than El Niño intensity alone. Whether climate change is making El Niño events themselves more severe over time remains actively debated among climate scientists, with some models suggesting the opposite.

That uncertainty does not undercut the near-term forecast for BC's winter and spring, which rests on more immediate ocean temperature data. It is a reason to treat any specific 2027 wildfire severity prediction as directional rather than settled this far in advance - but directional is sufficient to act on at renewal.
