The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) has issued a notice for Manitobans affected by the recent snowstorm, offering advice to residents recovering from the weather event.

“We know this storm has caused significant difficulties across the province and our thoughts are with the families who have had their lives disrupted,” said IBC Western vice-president Celyeste Power.

Power has recommended storm-affected Manitobans call their insurance representative whenever they are able to, so that the insurance professional can help them with their claims.

IBC offered a reminder in its statement that most home and business insurance policies will cover damage caused by storms – including damage caused by snow and wind. To err on the side of caution, however, policyholders are advised to consult with their insurance representatives if certain parts of their policy need clarification.

Other tips the bureau shared included:

  • Documentation is an important part of the claims process, and IBC is calling all policyholders to meticulously track the damage to their property; taking photos will be extremely helpful.
  • Those policyholders who have to move out of their properties due to insured damage must also check with their insurer if their policy covers additional living expenses.
  • Refrigerators, freezers, and their contents may be covered for damage related to food spoilage caused by a power interruption; policyholders are once again advised to take photos and document the contents of their fridge.

A recent report from The Canadian Press found that about 13,000 residents in Manitoba are still without power; Manitoba Hydro has offered assurances that it will expedite the restoration of power across the province, but it will take several days.
