Right conference, wrong coat

Brokers took away a lot of good selling tips and ideas for 2014 from yesterday’s Crystal Ball conference in Toronto – unfortunately one broker took the wrong coat as well.

“We hope you enjoyed the day. Unfortunately, one of you went home in the wrong coat and you are in possession of someone else`s car keys!” wrote Rebecca Case, director of marketing for CW Group, in a hasty mass email to those attending the conference in the hopes that whoever took the coat would notice. “Please check your closet – the coat in question is a man`s full-length black coat.”

The email – sent out at 4:25, went on to describe that the coat that was left behind was “a full-length GRAY coat, with a black scarf (with thin red, orange, yellow and white stripes) and leather gloves in the pocket.”

“The man had come all the way from Newmarket, and his car keys were in the coat,” Case told Insurance Business. “I quickly sent out the email appealing for the return of the coat. As time passed, we suggested that he take a cab home.”

Fortunately the coat, and the man who took it by mistake, returned by 5 p.m.

An unexpected benefit that came from the Case of the Curious Missing Coat were the flood of email messages from brokers who were contacted, offering their feedback on the conference.

“If there was anything good to come of it, we did get some humourous emails and great feedback on the conference itself,” Case said. “All too often we don’t get a lot of feedback, but with the email appeal, we heard things like ‘Thanks for a great day’ and some positive feedback.” (continued.)

Case said that the post-conference survey – set to go out in the next few days – had been revamped for this year.

“We put together some different questions, hopefully to glean some better insights to what people thought of the conference,” she said. “But the feedback we got from the missing coat email was fantastic.”
