Zurich Canada has named Marco Royer as its newest head of liability.

He will be responsible for leading underwriting teams in Zurich Canada’s liability portfolio, which includes casualty, energy casualty, construction liability, environmental liability and commercial automobile. Royer will also oversee Zurich Canada’s alternate risk transfer team, administering the development and growth of the healthcare and public sector industry verticals.

Royer joins the Zurich Canada executive team as part of his appointment and will report to Zurich Canada CEO Saad Mered. His appointment takes effect July 01.

He joins from Aon Benfield, where he was most recently vice president and casualty specialist, then Quebec regional manager and head of facultative operations. Royer has more than 30 years of experience in the European and Canadian insurance marketplaces. Before joining Aon Benfield, he spent 18 years at Gen Re, where he led teams in Paris, London, and Montreal.

“We are very excited to have a leader of Marco’s caliber and with deep experience and relationships in the Canadian market joining us,” commented Mered, who added that Royer’s appointment allows Zurich Canada to reposition its presence in the region.

Royer has the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the London UK CFA Society. He earned his MBA and his bachelor of arts in economics degree from McGill University in Montreal. In addition, he is a board member of La Fondation OLO in Montreal.
