GreenShield’s payer-provider model is reshaping how Canadians access health care and delivering measurable results.
In its latest report, Health Outcomes Report, Measuring Better Health for All, the non-profit insurer outlines how its integrated insurance and care delivery approach is driving improved access, better medication adherence, and reduced reliance on high-cost health services amid rising economic and system pressures.
Drawing on data from more than 7.5 million Canadians, the report shows that blending coverage with direct service delivery can help address affordability concerns and capacity strains across the healthcare system. GreenShield’s model, embodied in its GreenShield+ digital platform, links benefits plans directly to services like virtual care, pharmacy support, and chronic disease management.
According to the report, the payer-provider model has contributed to measurable impacts in areas often tied to insurance claims. The approach is designed to link benefits plans directly with access to services. It is reflected in GreenShield+, a digital platform where members can manage their benefits, connect with providers and submit claims.
GreenShield also noted that 77% of telemedicine appointments conducted through its platform in the first quarter of 2025 offset the need for in-person visits to family doctors, walk-in clinics or emergency departments. This shift can influence insurance cost structures by reducing higher-cost claims tied to hospital and urgent care services.
“As Canada's only national non-profit health and benefits company, we are committed to reducing systemic barriers to care and supporting overall health and well-being across the country,” said Zahid Salman, president and CEO of GreenShield.
“Our latest Health Outcomes Report reveals how our payer-provider model is revolutionizing the health and benefits experience by putting Canadians at the centre. By combining coverage and care into one seamless platform, we are improving health care access, equity and outcomes – reinforcing our mission of Better Health for All.”
Meanwhile, in the area of medication management, GreenShield Pharmacy reported adherence rates of 91% for cardiovascular medications and 85% for diabetes drugs. The company said these figures are 9% higher than industry averages.
According to the company, medication adherence is commonly linked to insurance cost containment, as better compliance can reduce claims related to complications or acute care.
GreenShield said it has committed $75 million to improve care access for one million Canadians by the end of 2025, targeting mental health, access to essential medications and chronic disease support.
