Sun Life Financial has announced that its upcoming annual meeting of shareholders and annual meeting of voting policyholders of Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada will be held in a virtual-only format.

Both meetings are scheduled for next month, on May 11, 2022. Because the meetings will be strictly virtual only, shareholders, voting policyholders, and members of the public will not be able to attend the meeting in person.

“This change is being made based on ongoing developments related to the COVID-19 pandemic and reflects Sun Life's commitment to prioritize the health and safety of our shareholders, voting policyholders, employees, clients and the broader community,” a statement from Sun Life said.

The company has advised that for those who need instructions on how to join the webcast and/or vote during the virtual meeting, shareholders should refer to the 2022 Management Information Circular, while voting policyholders should refer to the Information for Voting Policyholders' Booklet and their proxy form or voting instruction form.

The materials can be accessed from Sun Life’s website. Shareholders and voting policyholders have also been encouraged to vote in advance.

Sun Life’s decision to hold a virtual meeting comes just after Great-West Lifeco and its subsidiary Canada Life also elected to hold their annual meetings digitally.

Last week, Sun Life announced that it was expanding its support for humanitarian and resettlement efforts in Ukraine, through an additional $200,000 donated to the Canadian Red Cross and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). The insurer has donated a total of over $1.1 million to humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.
