Sun Life has announced that it will make an initial donation of $1 million to support communities that have been severely affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

In the weeks and months to come, the insurance company will offer financial aid to charities in the markets where Sun Life operates. A release said that Sun Life will be directing its donations to organizations addressing urgent health conditions – particularly those supporting at-risk populations such as the elderly. The insurer will also support food banks to ensure safe access to food for all.

“As the situation around the world rapidly evolves, this donation is a first step towards helping communities address basic needs resulting from COVID-19,” said Sun Life president and CEO Dean Connor in a statement. “We are committed to supporting the health and well-being of our clients, advisors, employees and the people in our communities.”
