Would you offer a free car just for a quote?

There aren’t many brokers offering a free car to potential clients who ask for an insurance quote – but there is one in Nova Scotia who did today.

Brian MacKeigan of Dartmouth, N.S. will be given the keys to a 2015 Ford Escape as a grand prize winner in the Select Sweepstakes, and all he had to do was pick up the phone and ask his local insurance broker Macdonald Chisholm Trask for a quote.

But from a marketing perspective, it has been win-win for the some 55 brokers who participated – bringing in new quotes and clients, and placing them on a level playing field with the big directs.

“It has been a huge success from a quote generation perspective. Fifty-five brokers from across the country, pooling their resources from coast to coast,” says Jeff Patterson, national business development manager with Economical Select. “Normally brokers don’t have the wherewithal independently to do that. This is more on the scale of the direct writers. But collectively, it has given them from a marketing perspective to compete in that space.”

The Escape comes from group insurer Economical Select and MCT Insurance brokers, with the official handing over of the keys happening at MacPhee Ford in Dartmouth this afternoon.

And Patterson points out that the client is winning much more than just a vehicle.

“Not only is he now saving $1,000 this year on his home and auto insurance,” he told Insurance Business, “he is the proud owner of a 2015 Ford Escape compliments of Select Sweepstakes.”

As a member of the Nova Scotia Chamber of Commerce group through his employer, Praxair, MacKeigan was eligible for exclusive group pricing in addition to being entered into the sweepstakes.

As for MacKeigan, he is understandably happy with how things worked out with his insurance quote.

“A neighbour referred me to James Mizzi at Macdonald Chisholm Trask after I expressed my frustration over insurance premium increases for less coverage,” said MacKeigan. “In a brief and surprisingly painless conversation with James, he understood all my relevant insurance requirements and got back to me with combined savings of over $1,000 a year for better home and auto insurance coverage than I previously had. I am so happy I have recommended him to several friends. He even sent me a Tim’s card thanking me for my business and referrals.”

The contest began back in April nationwide, and two more vehicles will be up for grabs – one in December, and one in March.

“We are offering this Select Sweepstakes contest to reward people for just calling in for a quote,” says David Fitzpatrick, Economical’s divisional vice-president of Economical Select. “There are three grand prizes: the 2015 Ford Escape, a 2015 Toyota Rav4, and a 2015 BMW 320i sedan. Other prizes include 12 16GB Wi-Fi tablets, four $2,500 travel certificates and more than 100 $250 gas cards.”

For MCT president and CEO Michael Brien, the partnership with Economical Select has been fruitful.

“I am delighted that one of our Atlantic Canada clients has won a grand prize from this national sweepstakes,” says Brien. “The advertising materials supplied by Economical Select brought a fresh approach and instills confidence in clients that they are a strong contender in the group insurance marketplace with enhanced product offerings and competitive pricing.”
