Relation Insurance Services has acquired the assets of Crop Rx Insurance Services, further expanding its crop insurance presence in California's Central Valley.
The transaction took effect on March 31. Financial terms were undisclosed.
Based in Fresno, California, Crop Rx was founded in 2014 and focuses on federal crop insurance for growers across the state. The agency has built its book around coverage written under the US federal crop insurance program, which is delivered through private insurers and agents.
“We’re excited to join Relation,” said Michael Klepper, chief executive officer of Crop Rx. “They’ve been serving California growers for more than 75 years and are a strong leader in the industry. It was a natural fit for our team.”
The acquisition fits Relation’s broader, acquisition-driven growth strategy.
The Walnut Creek, California-based brokerage, backed by private equity investors, has completed dozens of deals in recent years across property-casualty, employee benefits, and specialty niches, including agribusiness. Crop Rx adds additional scale and producer relationships in one of the most productive agricultural regions in the country.
The transaction also brings a specialist team with established grower relationships into its ag platform, creating opportunities to cross-sell farm, ranch, and commercial ag lines alongside federal crop insurance.
The deal comes at a time when federal crop insurance remains a central risk management tool for US farmers amid volatile weather patterns and commodity price swings. Multi-peril crop insurance and related products now cover a substantial share of major crop acreage, with premium volume running into the tens of billions of dollars annually and a significant portion subsidized through federal programs.
Local expertise and distribution are critical. The federal program is tightly regulated, with standardized policy terms and capped commissions, putting a premium on operational efficiency, scale, and on-the-ground knowledge. Those dynamics have helped drive consolidation among ag-focused agencies, as national and super-regional brokers look to acquire specialist books and producer teams rather than build from the ground up.
Against that backdrop, Relation’s purchase of Crop Rx underscores the continued appetite for specialist crop and ag intermediaries and highlights how regional players are using M&A to deepen their presence in key farming regions while broadening the range of risk and advisory services available to growers.
