Buick – an automotive marque under General Motors – has issued a recall for its Regal line of sedans over a brake issue which could pose a high accident risk.

The automobile company is recalling a total of 23,734 Regal sedans across the world from the 2018 to 2020 model years. The affected vehicles have a software issue affecting their braking system, which could lead to a loss of electronic brake assist under certain conditions. If this issue manifests in a car, its brakes will require more force to be applied, which could surprise drivers caught in a sudden braking situation and lead to an accident.

“On certain vehicles, the electronic brake boost may not work properly when there is a partial or full loss of vacuum-brake assist,” said Transport Canada in a statement regarding the issue. “As a result, the vehicle may not meet the stopping-distance requirements of Canadian regulations.”

Auto123.com reported that in Canada, 2,130 models are affected by the recall.

GM has stated that a warning light on the dashboard will indicate if the electronic brake control module (EBCM) completely fails. The parent auto company also said that drivers may also notice that there is an increase in brake pedal resistance in affected cars; while this issue will not render the brakes inoperable, they will require even more force to operate.

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by GM by mail, asking them to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the EBCM software updated.
