The Insurance Institute of Canada has elected a new chair of its board of governors, it announced yesterday.

Jean-François Blais was appointed to the position at the Institute’s 63rd annual general meeting in October, it said.

Blais has been president of Intact Insurance since 2011, and previously spent seven years at the helm of AXA Canada as a board member and chief executive.

Prior to being elected as chair of the IIC, he served as deputy chairman after being elected to the role in November 2015.

Blais said he was pleased to assume his new leadership role, adding that the Institute has a “distinguished tradition of supporting the careers and growth of Canadian p&c insurance professionals.”

“As the p&c industry continues to evolve, it is important for insurance professionals to continue to develop and advance their skills, and improve their knowledge to grow professionally and personally,” he added.

The institute’s president and CEO, Peter Hohman, said the board plays a pivotal role in charting the future direction of p&c insurance education.

He went on to say: “Our board is committed to providing the p&c industry with relevant, high-quality education that insurance professionals can apply to serve the needs of Canadian insurance consumers,” adding that the organization was pleased to accommodate a wide variety of learning preferences and styles.

“We are always looking for new ways to make our education available in spaces where members find it easiest to learn, whether that be in classrooms or online,” he said.

Alongside Blais, who has a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science from Laval University and is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, other members of the IIC’s 2016-17 executive committee include: Lynn Oldfield, deputy chair of the board and president & CEO of AIG Insurance Company of Canada; Jeff Goy, vice chair & governor at large, and president & CEO of The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company; and Bob Tisdale, immediate past chair and president & COO of Pembridge and Pafco Insurance Companies.

The Insurance Institute is a professional education body for the property & casualty (p&c) insurance industry in Canada.
