Another broker weighs in on the dubious benefits of winter tires achieving the 15 per cent goal set by Ontario’s provincial government, making it this week’s Comment of the Week.

Paul C. Armstrong lamented the politics driving the premium reduction target set by Queen’s Park, and further questioned the political motives behind insurers asking brokers to convince clients of the value of using winter tires.

“Ideas or thoughts implemented by a political party or government are meant for self-attention and seldom does wisdom or good thought process go into the equation.

“However, it stirs the pot and gets consumers asking. Banter on the premium reduction will go on until the next provincial election.

“About winter tires: Insurers have become political as well in asking brokers to convince their clients to use them. Since most insurers know little about their competition, statistics on accidents for those with or without winter tires is likely unknown – and maybe not even by the insurer who is promoting the idea.

“Snow tires aren’t the issue; the attitude of drivers is.”
