Sandbox Mutual Insurance has maintained its support of the Insurance Brokers Association of Canada's Broker Identity Program at the Magenta Level.

The sponsorship funds IBAC's national advertising campaign promoting the value brokers provide through choice, advice and advocacy, along with IBCA's technology leadership work, broker workforce development, and its federal advocacy to maintain the staturoy separation of banking and insurance.

"Great insurance starts with great advice. Brokers bring the expertise and human connection that turn insurance from a product into real protection for people and businesses," said Rob Jones, Sandbox's president and CEO. "Sandbox is proud to continue our support of IBAC in championing a strong, modern broker channel." IBAC CEO Peter Braid called the renewal "a strong vote of confidence" in the association's efforts to advocate for a competitive marketplace.

Long-standing IBAC relationship

Sandbox Mutual Insurance provides home, auto, commercial and farm coverage exclusively through brokers across Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba.

This isn't a new relationship. Sandbox previously supported the program at the "Full Partner" level in both 2023 and 2024, meaning this year's "Magenta Level" designation likely reflects a renamed sponsorship tier rather than a change in Sandbox's actual level of commitment, consistent with how IBAC has referred to equivalent-tier renewals from other carriers this year.

Sandbox joins a lengthy 2026 roster of broker-exclusive carriers renewing at the same Magenta Level, including Wawanesa, Trisura, Intact Insurance, Economical Insurance, Wynward Insurance Group and Portage Mutual, alongside Unica Insurance, HSB Canada and Red River Mutual. That volume of same-tier renewals across a single year suggests the broker-exclusive insurer segment is treating BIP sponsorship as a coordinated, near-universal commitment rather than a discretionary marketing spend individual carriers weigh independently.

Why the banking-insurance separation advocacy still matters

The Broker Identity Program dates back to 1988, launched directly in response to federal government proposals at the time to let banks sell insurance, a fight IBAC has continued waging through every subsequent statutory review of the Bank Act.

That legislation still explicitly prohibits banks from undertaking insurance business, acting as agents for placing insurance, or leasing branch space to insurance sellers. The issue remains genuinely live: the federal government's 2025 budget extended the sunset clause on the Bank Act, the Insurance Companies Act and the Trust and Loan Companies Act, preserving the current framework while setting up the next comprehensive legislative review down the road. Every BIP sponsorship, including Sandbox's, is functionally a contribution toward IBAC's continued positioning ahead of that next review.

For brokers, particularly those placing personal and commercial lines business in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba where Sandbox operates, this renewal is a small but consistent signal that regional broker-exclusive carriers remain financially committed to defending the distribution model brokers depend on, not just the large national insurers with the most visible market presence.

IBAC's 2026 public education efforts have also focused on talent and natural catastrophe challenges facing the industry, with more than half of surveyed brokers naming natural catastrophes as their top current concern, meaning this funding supports messaging that extends well beyond the original banking-separation fight the program was built around.
