Teachers Life has appointed Mark Cummings as its new president and CEO.

Cummings will assume the role by October 01, and will be based in Toronto. He succeeds Doug Baker, who had served as president and CEO of Teachers Life since 2006.

“I am tremendously honoured to join Teachers Life and serve our member base,” Cummings said in a statement. “The opportunity to lead a proud organization with almost 80 years of history, a track record of innovation and growth, and an incredibly talented team is very motivating.”

“I believe there is an appetite for quality life insurance in Canada that is supported by both strong business acumen and a firm commitment to community-based values,” he added. “Teachers Life is in a unique position to deliver on this, with its deep connection to the community and fraternal values, combined with an advanced commitment to innovation. It is truly an exciting place to be.”

Cummings was most recently the CEO of Cummings & Company Consulting. Previously, he had served as president and CEO of Scotia Life Insurance Company for nearly a decade. Prior to joining Scotiabank, Cummings held a number of leadership roles at RBC and the Canada Life Insurance Company.

“With his deep experience in insurance, leadership qualities, and successful track record for delivering shareholder return, I can think of no-one better than Mark to lead Teachers Life through this next chapter,” commented Teachers Life board of directors chair Randy McGlynn. “Mark’s values are very much aligned with those of Teachers Life and his appointment is a strong fit for the organization and its mandate and promise.”
