Around 100 car windows were smashed in a single night across Vancouver, prompting an investigation by the local police.

The incidents primarily occurred in the Marpole area, concentrated around the Granville Street and 64th Avenue intersection.

Additional cases were reported near Fir Street and 11th Avenue, according to a statement released by the Vancouver Police Department on Friday.

Sgt. Steve Addison said that an unidentified individual seemed to have “indiscriminately targeted” the damaged vehicles.

Surveillance footage obtained by CBC News depicted the perpetrator as he approached parked vehicles on Thursday morning and subsequently smashed their windows.

No arrests have been made in connection to the case, but police said they are actively engaging with witnesses and collecting additional footage from the affected area.

“We expect the number of cases to rise as people who have not used their cars for a day or two come outside and discover damage,” said Addison. “We'd like anyone who has not made a police report to contact us as soon as possible.”

The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) has reported that it received a total of 18 claims as a result of the window-smashing spree. It said it was too early to determine the total cost of the damage.

The claims made in relation to this incident fall under vandalism and are covered by optional comprehensive coverage, according to a spokesperson from the Crown corporation.
