A few months after shaking up its Canadian operations with a new leadership team, Zurich Canada has now named its head of operations.

Mathias Sommer (pictured) was leading the operations team as vice president of operations for commercial insurance in Canada since September 2017. He will continue to be based in Toronto, reporting to Zurich Canada CEO Saad Mered. In the expanded role, Sommer will lead teams responsible for underwriting support and services, information technology, including data management, operations and project management, including application development and design, onboarding new projects, business architecture and business transformation, facilities management, and procurement, according to a press release from Zurich Canada.

“Mathias’ experience in business transformation, technology enablement, organizational development and project leadership will greatly enhance the development and execution of the operating model we are creating for Zurich Canada,” said Mered.

Sommer had previously acted as head of business services and solutions for North America. Before making the move to North America, he worked as a senior manager in Zurich’s internal consulting team supporting strategy and transformation efforts across a variety of regions, including the UK, Switzerland, and Russia.
