The Canadian Red Cross in PEI reported that there have been 268 applicants for the provincial disaster assistance program for damage caused by post-tropical storm Dorian.

The program is the first of its kind for the province of PEI, created to assist residents with uninsurable basic property loss from natural calamities. The program will cover homeowners, small businesses, municipal governments, and non-profits.

To help facilitate registration into the program, the Canadian Red Cross has started accepting applications from affected residents.

Of the 268 who signed up, 219 were households, 40 were small businesses, and nine were non-profit organizations.

Red Cross program manager Alanna Green told CBC News that calls for applications continue to come in.

“A lot of it’s tree damage around their properties,” she mentioned. “There have been some properties as well that do have some property damage to the buildings themselves and outbuildings.”

Green pointed out that it takes time to get a complete application, especially since applicants are required to produce receipts, pictures and property information.

The deadline to register for the disaster assistance program is November 29, 2019, but applications can be received up to December 13, 2019.
