Canadians united on climate and DEI: Gore Mutual survey

Cross-partisan support for these issues can impact carriers' long-term strategies

Canadians united on climate and DEI: Gore Mutual survey

Diversity & Inclusion

By Josh Recamara

A recent survey conducted by Gore Mutual Insurance Company and research firm RKI suggests that Canadians hold broadly similar views on climate change and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), regardless of political affiliation.

The findings may have implications for how insurers assess risk and develop long-term strategies.

The survey, conducted in November 2024 with over 1,000 participants, found that more than 90% of respondents expressed either support for or neutrality toward workplace and community-based climate and DEI initiatives.

Support for climate policy extended across the political spectrum, with 50% of right-leaning and 74% of left-leaning respondents indicating approval. A majority also viewed DEI initiatives as contributing to stronger intergenerational and cross-demographic relationships, though some respondents noted that certain groups, including older adults and lower-income individuals, may be underrepresented in related discussions.

“This research disrupts the common belief that DEI and climate action are partisan issues,” said Gaby Polanco Sorto, vice president, Purpose & Sustainability at Gore Mutual. “Canadians see these issues as deeply personal, not political. They care because these issues affect their health, their families, and their futures.”

The findings align with Gore Mutual’s focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors. The company has adopted a sustainable investment policy, completed a greenhouse gas emissions inventory, and undertaken climate risk scenario analysis as part of its underwriting and pricing framework. These efforts follow recommendations from the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

Gore Mutual also launched the Climate and Equity Lab in 2023 in partnership with Co-operators. The initiative examines how climate events affect vulnerable populations in urban settings.

The lab’s first report, released in mid-2024, outlined strategies for increasing resilience in communities facing heightened exposure to climate-related risks. The research indicates a potential shift in how insurers engage with the public on issues that intersect with risk, sustainability, and social equity.
