An Alberta brokerage is now celebrating its ascent to Canada’s Top Small & Medium Employers list, but there’s another even more important reason to be proud, says one employee

“I’ve worked with many large companies based around the world and I’ve only heard whispers of the ones that actually do things like this,” says Kat Macaulay, communications specialist with Rogers Insurance, based in Calgary, Alta. “But I was present when Lee Rogers told four employees this year that their dreams would be fulfilled – it was extraordinary.”

It is a company initiative by Rogers to help four employees each year realize their dreams, Macaulay told Insurance Business. Just some of those dreams include purchasing an insulin pump for a family that couldn’t afford one for their Type 1 diabetic son; paying for a flight so a husband diagnosed with a terminal illness could visit his friends and family back home; and helping a single mom with a learning disability and depends on food banks to purchase clothing, furniture, eyeglasses and dental work.

One brokerage that has partnered with Rogers – Sharp Insurance – is featured in the December issue of Insurance Business magazine, due out this week. (continued.)

For Macaulay, receiving an award as a top Canadian employer is great – but the good work being done through the Dream Program by Rogers deserves as much attention – a program that has disbursed upwards of $150,000 since 2008 to support employees realize their dreams.

“I know that the award has relevancy with our business community but apart from that,” she says, “what resonates most for me is how Rogers gives back to employees with the Dream Program.”

Rogers made the top 100 list through employee initiatives like ‘Popcorn and slushy’ Fridays, coming to work with four-legged friends, flex time and several social events.

“We know that there is more to life than a nine-to-five job,” says Lee Rogers, president of Rogers Insurance. “That’s why we’re always looking for opportunities to make the experience our employees have in the office second-to-none.”

Rogers Insurance is the largest employee-owned brokerage in Canada, employing more than 200 people across western Canada.
