History of Verisk

Verisk started out as the Insurance Services Office (ISO) in 1971. Back then, ISO worked as a not-for-profit group that pooled insurance statistics and helped carriers meet state filing rules.

The organization later reorganized for the public markets under its current name. Insurers still recognize the ISO brand within its product lineup today.

  • 1971: the Insurance Services Office (ISO) begins operating as a not-for-profit group serving US property/casualty insurers
  • 2009: the company completes its initial public offering on the Nasdaq under the ticker VRSK
  • 2022: Verisk sells its 3E environmental unit, financial services business, and energy business to refocus entirely on insurance

Those three deals left the firm with one reportable segment: insurance. The company has since increased its investment in artificial intelligence and machine learning, an area it links back to data gathered since 1971.

Insurance solutions

The company organizes its work around four insurance focus areas: property/casualty, life and annuities, reinsurance, and specialty markets. Its tools support the full policy lifecycle, from underwriting and rating through claims resolution.

  • underwriting and rating data for personal and commercial property, auto, and general liability lines
  • claims tools covering first notice of loss, investigation, anti-fraud, estimation, and resolution
  • catastrophe and risk modeling software for natural hazards and other extreme events
  • life and annuity administration and analytics through the FAST platform
  • additional solutions for construction, government and municipal risk, real estate, and transportation

The firm built its name on catastrophe risk modeling and still develops software in that category. Underwriting and claims data for insurers remain the core business, and the company says its data warehouse spans tens of billions of records. Some tools also extend into construction and transportation.

Verisk in the insurance industry

The company positions itself as a data partner to insurers, not a competitor selling coverage. Verisk says its client base includes the top 100 US property/casualty insurers, along with other insurers, reinsurers, and brokers. The firm designs its AI tools to be explainable and auditable, given the industry’s regulatory demands.

Awards and recognition

Insurance Business America named one of Verisk’s product sales executives to its IB America’s Hot 100 2025 list, which recognizes professionals who helped shape the industry that year. If you want a look at other industry awards and special reports, visit IBA’s Best In Insurance page.

Mission and values

The firm frames its purpose as helping the insurance industry make better use of data, analytics, and technology, according to its own materials. It organizes its culture around three stated values: learning, caring, and results. Verisk has earned Great Place to Work certification in the US, UK, Spain, Poland, and India.
