The Centre for Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO) has announced that its Innovation and Emerging Technology (INNOTECH) advisory committee and Application Programming Interface (API) working group have finalized the business requirements for all the use cases on its 2022 API roadmap.

There are 40 new use cases overall, with 10 each for personal automobile, habitational insurance, individually rated commercial automobile (IRCA), and commercial general liability (CGL). These 10 cases are the following:

  • Addition of coverage/risk
  • Deletion of coverage/risk
  • Creation of first notice of loss
  • Creation of quote submission
  • Amendment of payment details
  • Policy amendment of details
  • Policy cancellation
  • Getting claims status
  • Getting quote
  • Requesting bind

CSIO’s technical working group will use the finalized requirements to create Java Script Object Notation (JSON) API standards, improving real-time data exchange between insurer systems and broker management systems (BMS). CSIO said in a statement that the JSON format was selected by its teams due to the fact that it “allows systems to share larger amounts of information faster than ever before.”

The absence of JSON API standards would require brokers to manually access client information through an insurer’s portal or by calling them directly, the CSIO release added. As such, defining business requirements for different use cases is “a major achievement” that supports the INNOTECH advisory committee’s mandate of improving the customer experience in the broker channel through digitalization.

“The successful completion of our 2022 API roadmap is an important milestone in CSIO’s digital customer experience transformation efforts,” said Derek Oke, AVP, chief architect at Travelers Canada. “We’re another step closer to our ultimate goal of real-time data exchange between insurers and broker management systems because of the hard work, collaboration and passion for continuous improvement of this working group.”

The CSIO’s new API standards will be available for both insurers and vendors “soon,” according to CSIO’s statement. Upon release, these standards could be downloaded and programmed into individual systems to improve communication with brokers’ BMS.

“CSIO congratulates the INNOTECH Advisory Committee and the Working Groups on an excellent year,” said the CSIO statement. “The industry looks forward to seeing how they will build on this year’s success to further accelerate the development of JSON API use cases in 2023.”

Last month, CSIO’s Commercial Lines working group also finalized requirements to quote and bind small business insurance for real estate customers, in addition to those for contractors, retailers, and business and professional services.
