Motorist with name too 'offensive' for license plate takes matters into own hands

With Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) once again turning down his request to have his surname on a vanity licence plate, Dave Assman has taken matters into his own hands by having a decal specially made for the rear portion of his truck, proudly flashing his name.

Assman, who insists his name is pronounced “OSS-men,” had appealed SGI’s rejection of his plate earlier this week after news of his last rejection made national headlines. He later received word that his request had been turned down again.

This was not the first time his name was rejected for a vanity plate. Assman first requested for the custom plate back in the 1990s, when it was rejected by SGI because it was “profanity.” His most recent application was rejected on the grounds that it was “offensive, suggestive or not in good taste.”

“I think they’re too worried that people are going to have hurt feelings about something that is complete nonsense,” Assman said in a statement to National Post. “Even if it wasn’t my last name who is it going to hurt?”

Undeterred by rejection, Assman then opted to have a decal displaying his name instead. The oversized decal – designed to cover the entire tailgate of Assman’s white Dodge Ram pickup truck – resembles the vanity licence plates SGI issues. Aside from prominently showing “ASSMAN” in capital letters, the decal also includes the words “Saskatchewan” and “Land of Living Skies,” Saskatchewan’s motto.

“See, I hate to say it but I’m kinda a sarcastic ass and well I just wanted to go big!” Assman remarked.

Although Assman managed to get around SGI’s rejection, the insurer seemed to take his decal in good cheer. SGI recently issued an official response to Assman on Twitter, saying: “All’s well that ends well.” The post was accompanied by a smiley face emoji.
