The Centre for Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO) outlined its progress on key initiatives at the 2025 Members’ Meeting and Reception, held April 16 at One King West Hotel in Toronto. The event focused on advancements in Data Standards and the services supporting Canada’s property and casualty insurance sector.
Michael Lin, CSIO board chair and chief information officer at Travelers Canada, opened the meeting by highlighting 2024 as a critical year in the organization's evolution. Lin noted that CSIO had moved beyond its foundational planning phase to actively develop and refine industry standards.
Meanwhile, interim president Kathryn Sinclair provided an overview of the organization’s accomplishments, including notable advancements in Data Standards, the expansion of digital services, and professional development offerings.
Sinclair was appointed interim president following the departure of Catherine Smola, who left to pursue other opportunities. Sinclair has more than 20 years of experience in the property and casualty sector, including her recent role as CSIO’s vice president of strategy and operations.
Sinclair said the expansion of the Commercial Lines Data Standards was a key development, with more industry segments now covered. The adoption of updated eDocs Standards also continued to grow, while efforts to eliminate Z-Codes remained a priority. She also noted that CSIO’s INNOTECH Advisory Committee and API Working Groups had successfully developed JSON API Data Standards and revised the organization’s API Security Standards.
Meanwhile, CSIO also reported high engagement with its digital services. According to the 2024 Member Survey, CSIOnet and My Proof of Insurance (MPOI) achieved satisfaction ratings of 99% and 96%, respectively. Sinclair also discussed CSIO’s efforts in professional development, including the launch of 15 webinars, a Cybersecurity Education Program, and over 5,000 hours of educational content made available to members.
The event also included an awards ceremony recognizing CSIO members for their contributions to the organization’s standards initiatives. Applied Systems Canada was recognized for enabling real-time quoting across several commercial lines segments. L’Unique General Insurance received certification for a fourth commercial lines segment. Several insurers were also acknowledged for eliminating Z-Codes, adopting the updated eDocs Standards, and implementing the revised API Security Standards.
The keynote presentation featured Deloitte partners Mukul Ahuja and Firas Zawadi, who discussed artificial intelligence’s growing role in the insurance sector, with a focus on its applications in underwriting, claims processing, and customer service. Their presentation was followed by a Q&A session and a networking reception.
CSIO also confirmed that its board of directors will remain in place for 2025, continuing their work on advancing the development of industry standards and services.
