The future of the Canadian insurance industry looks assured with the Insurance Business Young Guns, a talented pack of insurance professionals – aged 35 or younger – igniting the industry with youthful stamina and tenacity.

Hailey Taskey is one such Young Gun taking the industry by storm. She is an account executive at Lloyd Sadd Insurance Brokers, looking after the non-profit and dealership sectors, which are both experiencing continuous growth.

Since taking on a sales role three years ago, Taskey, who holds a Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) designation and a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation, has managed to grow her book of business with great success. She values “being trusted and looked to for advice” and says she is determined to “make that win” for her clients.

Outside of the office, she enjoys staying active, cooking, travelling and spending time with friends and family. We caught up with her to find out the secrets of her success:

How did you get started in the industry?

It was an accident. My dad had a good friend in the industry and I needed a summer job. I thought I was going to be a dentist, but I ended up really loving the industry and stayed.

What are the best parts of your job?

Helping clients, making them happy and turning a bad situation around are the best parts of the job. Conquering obstacles and challenges and delivering a solution to a client or prospect is something I get excited about every day. Being trusted and looked to for advice, and making that win are the things that keep me going.

What challenges have you faced in your role?

Many, and the challenges continue from personal to professional. Early on, the challenges were more around product knowledge, and now it’s finding a balance between ensuring existing clients are happy and well taken care of, and ensuring production keeps up. Every day has new challenges and situations.

What have you learned from your job at Lloyd Sadd?

Great things do not come from comfort zones. If you are willing to work hard and take risks, it is worth it. Lloyd Sadd is a great organization full of support and opportunity. I really learned that I have a presence in this industry, and my company gave that to me.

What advice would you give to someone working their way up the insurance ladder?

It’s a fantastic industry with many areas you can advance in. The things you learn starting out are important through your entire career. And listen to the experiences of others - we can all learn from these and grow.

If you weren’t working in insurance, what would you be doing?

I would be a dentist. Or so I think….

What is your favourite hobby?

Traveling, cars and cooking. I can’t pick just one!
